Hotel Post Bezau: a unique setting

Nestled deep in the Austrian mountains, surrounded by pasturelands, sits a well-being temple. A one-of-a-kind destination, Hotel Post Bezau has mastered the art of relaxation and taken it to new heights. This remarkable retreat has belonged to five generations of the family line of skincare high priestess, Susanne Kaufmann. At just 23 years old, the founder of the eponymous skincare brand assumed management of the hotel, 170 years after it was initially opened by her great grandfather. It’s within these very walls that Susanne Kaufmann’s first clean cosmetic products were conceived – originally for the exclusive use of the spa – inspired by the hotel’s surrounding nature and the power of alpine plants.

Today, the original structure and traditional style of this Austrian chalet stand seamlessly against a more modern, minimalist extension – perfectly exposed to natural light – that embodies all things wellness. With its wide wooden panelling and warm feel, the older building hosts the hotel’s restaurant, along with several rooms. Meanwhile, additional suites, a gym, well-being studios and a Badehause boasting a sauna, hammam and several swimming pools can be found niched within the more recent wing.

A sensorial experience centred upon well-being

In keeping with Susanne Kaufmann’s beauty philosophy, Hotel Post Bezau offers a holistic well-being experience that spans far beyond traditional treatments and hospitality experiences. Every space, every programme and every detail – such as the different tea stations dotted around the hotel – has been designed to rebalance, regenerate and resource the mind and soul. While this exceptional establishment has always taken an approach that’s focused on health and well-being, since 2019 bespoke retreats dedicated to the body and face and offering a harmonious blend of nutrition, movement, sleep and treatments have been incorporated into its offering.

A stay structured around nutrition and movement

At Hotel Post Bezau, each meal represents a sacred ritual. The menu is composed of local, fresh and seasonal produce, exemplifying a virtuous approach to nutrition fused with delicate flavours. During retreats, detox meals or custom-made courses awake the palate, releasing renewed energy from within in a way that perfectly encapsulates the hotel’s philosophy: healthy eating can provide pleasure for the senses, just as much as it can bring nourishment to the body.

Physical movement restores a subtle sense of structure to retreat days: yoga overlooking the mountains, Qi Gong at the edge of alpine forests or meditative walks along Bregenzerwald’s beautiful trails. Relaxation spots and calming rituals invite guests to slow down and breathe deeply, reconnecting the body and mind. In this sanctuary-like space, every action is intended to elicit mental tranquillity and prompt reparative sleep, for rediscovered internal harmony that’s distanced from daily stresses.

Finally, inside the spa, treatments aren’t the only access point for deep-rooted R&R. Saunas with summit views, heated pools and various relaxation spaces promise revitalisation and uninterrupted moments of contemplation. In this singular setting, the body unwinds, peace of mind returns and each visit becomes a voyage for the senses – a precious pause from the everyday, during which guests learn to listen to their needs and rediscover their inner balance.

An unblemished natural backdrop

Located in the heart of Bregenzerwald, Hotel Post Bezau offers breathtaking views of the Austrian Alps, ranging from rich-in-colour alpine forests to snowy summits and flowered meadows. Every gaze – be it glanced through a window or cast from the spa’s outdoor terrace – captures a mesmerising postcard picture. The scenic surroundings become a silent companion, or even a familiar friend, throughout your stay. And through its extensive offering of outdoor activities, the hotel invites you to heartily embrace the natural environment that encircles it, nudging you to adopt a slower pace so that you can live in the present moment and reconnect with your sense of self.

Both the hotel and spa are founded upon an eco-friendly framework, placing value on local resources, sustainability and preservation of the surrounding natural landscape. The hotel bottles its own water – derived from a local source – in reusable glass, develops its own biodegradable cleaning products, and limits its use of plastic. From its 4000m² vegetable plot come fresh herbs and vegetables that are delivered straight to the kitchen, reducing ‘food miles’ and facilitating seasonal cuisine. Even the hotel’s construction reflects this environmental conscientiousness; crafted from traditional wood from Bregenzerwald, its architectural design supports sustainability and demonstrates a deeply held respect for regional savoir-faire.

The Susanne Kaufmann spa: a sanctuary for the mind and body

It was in this very place, 15 years previously, that Susanne Kaufmann first envisaged the premise of her brand: beauty products combining potent active ingredients and alpine plants picked from the nature surrounding her hotel. The inspiration? Quality products to complement and enhance the benefits of the many massages and treatments offered by the spa. Today, Susane Kaufmann’s spa is a real sanctuary, dedicated to regeneration and serenity. Bathed in sunlight and decorated in a minimalist manner, its light wood, local stones and warm textures invite you into a cosy and ultra-comfortable realm of relaxation, where time appears to stand still.

The treatments extend far beyond simple aesthetic beauty – they’re designed to balance the body and mind, holding steadfast to a holistic approach that blends scientific expertise with alpine tradition. The therapists, trained to the highest level, tailor every massage to the needs of the individual, making each appointment a unique sensorial ritual. The rich textures of the products used, combined with the precision of each expert therapist’s hand movements, bring about an inimitable sensation of weightlessness coupled with profound well-being.

What we thought of our stay at Hotel Post Bezau

“A real breath of fresh air! This place lets you disconnect, exhale and gather yourself again. After three days here your batteries are completely recharged, and you’re left feeling relaxed, warm inside and totally serene.

Day 1: Our stay begins with a walk through the Bregenzerwald forest. The programme for the day includes a chlorophyll-fix and a foot bath from a little river (about 4°C) in the village. The cold water is definitely a shock to the system, but it leaves your body feeling refreshed and revived.

Day 2: The day starts with a yoga class, overlooking the mountains. Total silence – all you can hear are the sounds of nature. Next up is a face treatment enriched with Ectoin (one of the active ingredients Susanne Kaufmann favours in her formulas, since it soothes the skin and strengthens the skin barrier), resulting in smoothed, replumped skin. This treatment promotes drainage of the face, and it alleviated all the tension I was holding onto in my shoulders.

Day 3: Our last plant-based meal. Detox options are available on the menu here, but in no shape or form do these signify a punishment. We’re not talking a couple of boiled vegetables! The chef cooks to perfection, and the combination of flavours, textures and seasoning is exquisite. I’m almost tempted to ask the chef to set up shop in my hometown!

Overview: I would go back without a shadow of a doubt. With such outstanding services and offerings, this experience is a gift-to-self, to indulge in at least once!”
